The bridge to the island has been destroyed as have most of the buildings on the island. With the help of the local eccentric, Old Carmen, Mira gets out of the cottage. The cottage is still standing, barely, when the storm leaves but the bottom floor is toast. Mira rides out the storm in the attic of their cottage with only the company of a little cat that she found just before the storm hit. So, when the big storm hits the island, Jasper Lee and Mickey (their mother) are away. Jasper needs to go once a week for a special injection to the mainland. Mira has a younger brother, Jasper Lee, who has a rare genetic disorder. In the summer the island is inundated with tourists (Mira calls them Vacationeers) and the locals celebrate when they are left to themselves at the end of summer. Her best friends are Deni and Eva but the whole small class is pretty tight.
Mira Banul lives on a small island off the coast of New Jersey. So it seemed a little simplistic to me but I am sure it would be just right for a teenager. The narrator of the book is a teenager and she tells her story the way a teenager would. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a young adult novel but I think it is. Certain readers will definitely enjoy the beauty in the writing. I fear even though the content may be appealing, it'll be too slow for fans of Life as We Knew It. I would recommend this book to experienced readers in grades 9-12.
The survival parts were the most interesting and exciting for me, but even those didn't feel quite real enough. I don't think it's a book that's meant to be raced through, but I still felt like I wanted to be done long before I actually was. The story quickly turns into a tale of survival, as Mira must fend for herself with no contact with the mainland.While beautifully and poetically written, the story was very S-L-O-W for me and took me a long time to get through. It is during one of these treatments that Mira's mom and brother are away at the hospital on the mainland when a catastrophic storm unexpectedly strikes the island. Her brother is missing an enzyme, which causes him to be frequently hospitalized for treatments. Mira lives with her mother and younger brother on an island off the coast of Atlantic City.
